Abstract

Purpose: This study was conducted to identify the relationship among self consciousness, communication competence and interpersonal relation dispositions of nursing students.0

Methods: Data was collected from 804 nursing students from October 2 to December 10, 2008 by using survey instruments. Data was analyzed by the SPSS/WIN12.0 program.

Results: Public self-consciousness, social anxiety, and communication competence were significantly different according to age, grade, experiences in communication class, and experiences in psychiatric nursing practice. Private self-consciousness, public self-consciousness, and social anxiety correlated to communication competence and interpersonal relation dispositions. Communication competence positively correlated to independent-responsible, sympathetic- acceptable, social-friendly, ostentation-narcissistic dispositions while negatively correlating to rebellious-distrustful interpersonal relation dispositions.

Conclusion: This research suggests that self consciousness, communication competence and interpersonal relation dispositions are important factors in developing communication education programs.
